Judge (Placements): Joy Miller
Joy Miller has had a long career working with New Mexico art and artists. From 1997-1999, Miller was the chief preparator of the New Mexico State University Art Gallery (now the University Museum of Art) and the director of exhibition design and installation. In 2000, she began a curatorial career at the newly opened Las Cruces Museum of Art, where she would spend the next eighteen years. As Curator, Miller’s central focus was art of New Mexico and the Southwest, both contemporary and historic. Among prominent regional artists featured in solo exhibitions were Luis Jimenez, Gustave Baumann, Michael Naranjo, and Patrick Nagatani. Miller curated group exhibitions specific to New Mexico including New Mexico: 100 Years of Art; Elemental New Mexico; and the Here & Now Regional Triennial Exhibition. In addition to curation, Miller contributed to the development of educational programming at the museum. She assisted in building the museum’s studio programs and created core interpretive materials for Museum of Art exhibitions.
In 2018, Miller left her position at the Las Cruces Museum of Art to pursue independent work in the fields of both visual art and writing, including freelance writing and editing, critical writing in the arts, and the conceptualization of alternative art venues during the Covid shutdown. She resides in Mesilla, New Mexico.
Miller attended Thiel College, a liberal arts school in Greenville, PA, earning a BA in art and art history in 1990 and earned her MFA from Kent State University in 1996.
